Storytelling at MCI | Long Before "Once Upon a Time"

Registration will be held from August 15 to 22 or until spaces are filled (whichever comes first). On the day of the activity, tickets will be available at the box office to fill any spaces from those who registered in advance and do not attend. The children in your family probably know European castles, fairies and beasts. But do they know who lives at the bottom of the Araguaia River? Or how the great waterfalls of the Rio Negro were born? In this special edition of Indigenous August, the MCI Storytelling Program invites parents and educators to exchange traditional fairy tales for narratives that are alive, pulsing in the voice of those who inherited them. Four Masters of Knowledge take the circle to share stories that are not just fables, but compasses for how to live, care for and respect the Earth. There will be four cosmologies, told in a direct and affectionate way: "Adana, Kurukui and Buburi" (the passion that became a river): Emerson Baré tells the story of Adana, a young woman promised in marriage, but in love with another warrior. An escape through the rivers of the Amazon that ended not in tragedy, but in the creation of Adana Island and the fierce waterfalls of Kurukui and Buburi. "The Children of Berohoky: from the depths of the waters to life on land" (the choice to rise to land): Yriwana Teluira Karajá narrates the time when the Iny Mahãdu people lived submerged, in peace at the bottom of the waters, until a warrior discovered the outside. A deep reflection on human impact on nature, made from the ancestral doubt: is it worth living on the surface? "The Elderwoman, The Tree" (the pact of the sertão): straight from the Caatinga, Fitsaká (Pankararu) brings the memory of an old elderwoman who had as her sister and confidante a leafy Aroeira tree. From this friendship between human and plant, healing was born. Free adaptation of the book "The Cashew Tree", by Auritha Tabajara. "The Ancient Serpent That Enchanted the World" (the breath of the jararaca): Xipu Puri brings an original story of a boy born from the breath of a jararaca, who walks through the dark night carrying a fragile and powerful treasure: a clay vessel that holds the ancestral names of the Puri people. His destiny is the encounter with Grandmother Serpent, she who protects dreams and the very womb of the world. The wisdom and strength of this matriarch provoke a tremor in the depths of the earth – a shock so profound that awakens the land, making life pulse and sprout again. Bringing children to this active listening is not just a weekend outing. It is an educational and political act. It is giving them the chance to grow understanding that nature is not a stage to be exploited: it is mother, sister and memory. About Emerson Baré From the Baré people, native of the Alto Rio Negro Indigenous Land, in São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM). Student of the Professional Master's in Linguistics and Indigenous Languages at the National Museum of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (PROFLLIND-MN/UFRJ); and graduate in Pedagogy from the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar). At UFRJ, he is a member of the Collective of Indigenous Students (CEI), the Association of Postgraduate Students (APG) and student representative of PROFLLIND-MN; he also integrates the Articulation of Indigenous and Quilombola Policies (APIQ) and the National Forum of Indigenous School Education (FNEEI).
