Is this your event?About the event
In the Fall, 28 moveable bridges are opened in sequence along the Chicago River to let the sailboats leave the harbor for the season!
This year the schedule was disrupted by work on the Lake Street Bridge. Many Wednesdays bridge lifts were cancelled, and only two Saturdays, Oct 3 and Oct 10 were available to go in the Bridgehouse Museum to watch the gears raise and lowers the bridge.
However, a rare Tuesday bridge lift is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct 27!
NOTE: This walk will be a one-way trip, and NOT the usual round trip walk.
We will meet at 9:30 but not enter the Bridgehouse Museum: Go down the grand staircase at the southwest corner of the Michigan Ave (Dusable) Bridge to the river level. We'll meet under the bridge, where we can see the Columbus Ave Bridge being raised. The city determines the actual timing, so keep your eye on the event Comments in case I need to change our start time, so we don't miss it
It only takes 45 seconds for the bridge to go up, 8 minutes for the sailboats to pass through and 45 seconds for the bridge to lower
Then we will meander west on the Riverwalk to watch more bridges lift and lower, ending at the Lake Street Bridge or the Randolph Street Bridge.
Afterward, we can walk across the river to the Chicago French Market, at 131 N Clinton for lunch.
Bring warm gloves and hat! Weather can be unpredictable. Cold fingers will chill the fun!
