Author of the Maltese Falcon, Dashiell Hammett (1894-1961) lived in San Francisco from June of 1921, until October of 1929, most of the time with is wife and two children.
He pioneered the genre of hard-boiled detective magazine stories and novels.
We'll trace his time in San Francisco by finding the places where he lived and worked, as well as the locales he set his stories in, particularly the famed, Maltese Falcon.
We'll be going up an down the hills covering about three or four miles.
We're meeting at the Samuels Jewelers Clock in front of 856 Market St. (see photo)
This is not a loop walk. We'll be ending at the Civic Center near the Civic Center BART Station.
I've done enough research to put this tour together but I am not an expert. There are magazine stories, books, movies and the biography of Dashiell Hammett that go into the making of this tour. I can't thoroughly cover all that material. But can do enough to provide what I think will be a pleasant walk through some of this downtown San Francisco lore of a hundred years ago.
