The Gutenberg Galaxy — How Media Shapes the Way We Think
About the event
This is NOT an online meeting but an in-person meeting. Meeting in English. Reading the book is not required.
During the book discussion the leader of the discussion presents the most interesting parts of the book. The great emphasis is placed on discussion.
Book Description What if the technologies we use to communicate do more than transmit information — what if they change the way we think?
In *[The Gutenberg Galaxy](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/440463.The_Gutenberg_Galaxy)*, Marshall McLuhan examines how the development of writing, the alphabet, and especially the printing press transformed human perception, culture, and society. He argues that communication technologies are not neutral containers for information: the form through which we receive information can influence how we organize knowledge, experience the world, and relate to one another.
McLuhan traces the transition from predominantly oral cultures to the highly literate and print-based culture of the modern West. He explores how print encouraged particular forms of linearity, individualism, specialization, standardization, and visual organization — and how electronic media began to challenge this “Gutenberg” order.
The book also provides a framework for thinking about media beyond books and printing. If communication technologies can reshape our habits of perception, what are smartphones, social media, video, and AI doing to us today?
At this event, we'll use McLuhan's ideas as a starting point for a broader discussion about media, technology, perception, culture, reading, social organization, and the ways in which communication technologies shape human experience.
Discussion Topics
• Are media simply tools for transmitting information, or do they shape how we think? • How did the printing press change Western culture and the way people organized knowledge? • Why does McLuhan place so much importance on the transition from oral to literate culture? • Did print culture contribute to individualism, nationalism, and the modern idea of the individual? • What does McLuhan mean when he treats media as extensions of human senses? • Are digital media creating a new cultural environment comparable to the transformation caused by print? • How might smartphones and social media change our attention, perception, and relationships? • What can McLuhan's ideas help us understand about the transition from the Gutenberg era to the digital age?
