About the Event
"Tell me about a complicated man." In this session of the Modern Man's Book Club, we will be discussing one of the founding stories of Western literature: Homer's The Odyssey, in Emily Wilson's celebrated translation — the first by a woman into English, and one praised for its clarity and pace. The epic follows Odysseus's ten-year struggle to return home from Troy, and Telemachus's parallel coming-of-age as he searches for his father and tries to hold his household together in his absence. Join us as we discuss how Odysseus' journey embodies a certain type of masculinity, and break down its similarities and differences to the modern day.
Note: NIE/NTU researchers are currently conducting a study of book clubs in Singapore, and will be present to observe and audio-record the session. Participation is voluntary, and the session will proceed as normal. You may choose to opt out of being recorded at any moment.
About the Modern Man's Book Club:
Hosted by Isaac and Zubin, the Modern Man's Book Club is a book club that aims to explore male experiences and issues through the lens of literature. Through book discussions, we hope to build some understanding of what it means to be a man in this modern age.
