(ES/CAT 👇) When someone who has lived a year or more in an English-speaking country comes to an exchange, you can tell right away: they speak with real fluency. To reach that level, they had no choice but to expose themselves and step out of their comfort zone.

Coming to an exchange is a bit like getting on a plane and landing in a pub in an English-speaking country. If you think about it, it's not that different from reality. When you travel, you arrive at the airport, go to your hotel, visit one of the city's landmarks, and then sit down in a restaurant. You can recreate that same space in your own city: it's your chance to expose yourself and step out of your comfort zone. I'm a big believer in language schools, but if you don't speak that language with anyone outside of class, sooner or later you'll start to feel like you're not making progress. No matter how much new vocabulary you learn, you'll still feel stuck.

To get out of that feeling of being stuck, you have two options: get on a plane to an English-speaking country, or come this next Wednesday, October 21, from 19:15 to 21:00, at Bar SandwiChez (Travessera de Gràcia, 18), to expose yourself at our English exchange.

We get together to chat, meet new people and, above all, have a good time practicing whichever language each person wants to improve.

As in any good exchange, the idea is to alternate between both languages so everyone benefits: a few minutes speaking English, a few minutes speaking Spanish or Catalan, and so on. It's the best way to keep the conversation flowing and make sure everyone gets an equal share of practice time.

If we turn this language exchange into a habit at least twice a month, we'll notice the difference right away.

ES Cuando una persona que ha vivido uno o más años en un país anglófono viene a un intercambio, se nota enseguida por su fluidez al hablar. Para llegar a ese nivel, tuvo que exponerse y salir de su zona de confort.

Venir a un intercambio es un poco como coger un avión y aterrizar en un pub de un país anglófono. Si lo piensas bien, no es tan distinto de la realidad. Cuando viajas, llegas al aeropuerto, vas al hotel, visitas algún lugar típico de la ciudad y después te sientas en un restaurante. Ese mismo espacio lo puedes crear en tu propia ciudad: es tu oportunidad de exponerte y salir de tu zona de confort. Soy un gran defensor de las escuelas de idiomas, pero si fuera de la escuela no hablas ese idioma con nadie, tarde o temprano sentirás que no avanzas. Por mucho vocabulario nuevo que aprendas, te sentirás estancado.

Nos reunimos para charlar, conocer gente nueva y, sobre todo, pasarlo bien practicando el idioma que cada uno quiera mejorar.

Como en todo intercambio que se precie, la idea es alternar entre ambos idiomas para que todos salgamos beneficiados: unos minutos hablando inglés, otros hablando español o catalán, y así sucesivamente. Es la mejor forma de que la conversación fluya y de que cada uno aproveche igual su rato de práctica.
