For five years, Passionate Philosophers has brought curious people together in Amsterdam to explore the questions underneath everyday life.

To celebrate those five years, we’re starting a new chapter:
BEING HUMAN
Big questions. Real conversations. Phones down. Humans present.
A recurring series of offline forums for people who want to think more deeply, connect more honestly, and spend a little less time consuming life through a screen.
And for our first session, we’re starting with a deceptively simple question:
Are Your Thoughts Really Yours?
Our families shape us.
Our culture shapes us.
Our friends and experiences shape us.
Algorithms increasingly decide what gets our attention.
And now AI can answer, advise and even think alongside us.
So where exactly does our own thinking begin?
During this afternoon, we’ll explore conditioning, influence, attention, identity, algorithms and AI — and what it might actually mean to think for ourselves.
This is not a lecture and you don’t need any background in philosophy.
Expect a mix of short provocations, conversations in pairs and small groups, reflection, facilitated discussion and a larger forum where different perspectives can meet.
What will you leave with?
Hopefully:
• a clearer awareness of some of the forces shaping your own thinking;
• new perspectives that challenge assumptions you may not have noticed;
• a chance to explore what AI and algorithms are doing to our attention and judgment;
• several conversations that go well beyond normal small talk;
• and a few interesting humans you may genuinely want to meet again.
There is nothing you are supposed to believe by the end.
The purpose is not to give you the right answers.
It is to create a space where we can look at a meaningful question together.
Who is this for?
Anyone curious about people, philosophy, psychology, society, AI, relationships, consciousness or simply how to live a little more deliberately.
You don’t have to be “a philosopher.”
Come if you enjoy good questions, are willing to listen as much as speak, and would like to meet others who want something deeper than another networking event or afternoon of scrolling.
A small experiment 📵
For the main part of the gathering, we’ll invite everyone to keep their phones away.
Not because technology is bad.
Just to see what happens when, for a little while, our attention belongs completely to ourselves and to the people around us.
🥂 Celebrating 5 years
This series is also our way of celebrating five years of Passionate Philosophers in Amsterdam.
Over the coming months, Being Human will revisit some of our favourite questions from the past, introduce completely new ones, and hopefully become a regular home for thoughtful conversation and genuine connection.
