Big Story Festival: Sarah Gavron and Sophie Herxheimer

Join Sophie Herxheimer and Sarah Gavron for a 30 minute talk exploring the story behind their graphic novel Ode to Joy, followed by a creative workshop discovering how images can be used to tell stories. Ode to Joy follows the story of Ib Katznelson, from his family’s attempt to escape Denmark in 1943, to their eventual arrival at Theresienstadt, the ‘model’ concentration camp. Sophie Herxheimer's and Sarah Gavron's works have told stories of joy, tragedy and triumph through art, poetry and film. They'll show you how to tell stories using more than just words, as you create your own comic strip using pencils, collage and imagination. See if you can work out how to use drawings and speech bubbles to tell the story of your own journey and the places you visited along the way. How did it make you feel to look at something new, and very possibly, old? Maybe it will inspire you to make a longer book, or go on yet more explorations and journeys. Suitable for ages 11+. The subjects discussed in the talk include references to the Holocaust, and may be distressing to some visitors, parental discretion is advised. Families £15
