The Cat and the Canary
About the event
This is the classic old-dark-house movie (although the appellation belongs to James Whale’s 1932 film of that title) and the prototype for the Universal horror films of the 1930s. Based on a play by John Willard and influenced by Mary Roberts Rinehart and Avery Hopwood’s 1920 Broadway hit The Bat, the film was elevated by the inventive and stylish direction of Paul Leni, whose 1924 German expressionist classic Waxworks also combined wry humour with horror elements. A fantastically camp tone gives the character actors like Flora Finch and Tully Marshall full reign. With an original pre-recorded score by Neil Brand. 4K Digital restoration produced by Photoplay Productions. Screen: NFT1. Screening details: Special screening available; 4K Restoration; Intro by Patrick Stanbury of Photoplay.
