Mahler's Symphony No. 5 Gustav Mahler wrote his Fifth Symphony between 1901 and 1902, and it is one of his most beloved works. Tragedy and joy, pain and pleasure alternate in rapid succession. The Adagietto, in particular—the slow movement immortalized in the film Death in Venice —is deeply moving. It is a beautiful expression of Mahler's love for Alma, the woman he married while working on this symphony. Prior to Mahler's unsurpassed masterpiece, Wagner's Vorspiel and Karfreitagszauber from his final opera, Parsifal , will be heard.
