An exhibition featuring portraits of twelve LGBTQ+ Amsterdammers, in words and images. From activists of the 70s to young creatives. Together, they paint a collective picture of a changing city and a community that has never stood still. Free to visit from July 1 to September 30 during the opening hours of Stadsloket Centrum (Amstel 1).
Queer portraits in a changing city
Amsterdam: the first city where same-sex couples could marry, but also a city where only 43 percent of young people still consider it normal for two people of the same sex to be in love. A city full of queer places that is a logical host for World Pride 2026, but also a city that has lost its title as gay capital to other places.
Relief in hard times
12 Amsterdam LGBTQ+ people, born between 1954 and 2003, look back and look ahead. Those portrayed share their stories and how they experience being queer in Amsterdam in 2026. In times when the public debate is hardening, Queer Amsterdam hopes to bring softening through these personal portraits.
