It's election year, and once again ballots are being printed, politicians are campaigning, speeches are being made and debates are being had. All so that we, the people, can govern our own country. So that we can exercise our sovereignty, hold those in power accountable and determine our own future.
At least, that's the promise of democracy.
But how well does that promise hold up in reality? We remember promises made by politicians that were never kept. We know that powerful economic interests seek to influence politics, that foreign powers attempt to influence and undermine our societies, and that social media can be used to manipulate public opinion. In an increasingly complex world, one might reasonably wonder how much agency we as ordinary citizens truly have.
Sweden is also an increasingly multi-ethnic, multi-religious and culturally diverse country, made up of groups with different values, identities and interests. Do we vote primarily according to the interests of the groups we belong to? Or is there still some idea of a common good - something beyond our individual and group interests that we can collectively strive towards?
And yet, there are very real questions at stake in this election. Immigration and integration, crime and punishment, healthcare, education, the economy, energy, climate, defence and Sweden's place in an increasingly uncertain world. Whatever our doubts about politics, the decisions we make as a country have consequences.
So, as Sweden approaches the 2026 election, let's talk about democracy, political power and the future of our country.
