John Box and his Oscar-winning production design team (art director Terence Marsh and set decorator Dario Simoni) built early 20th century Moscow on elaborate sets in Spain as well as created Zhivago’s unforgettable ice palace for this David Lean-directed romantic epic. The resulting adaptation of the novel by Nobel Prize-winner Boris Pasternak became a box office smash. Omar Sharif and Julie Christie lead the all-star cast, with Maurice Jarre’s score (featuring “Lara’s Theme”) receiving one of the film’s five Oscars, which also included Color Cinematography (Freddie Young), Color Costume Design (Phyllis Dalton) and adapted screenplay (Robert Bolt).
