The Aunties are back in town! Belltown, to be precise, and in the most fabulous artist co-op where common objects, from books to clothes, abound. It’s a sweet space- simple, down-to-earth, unique- bring your own beverage (there are restaurants on every corner). In June we revived Auntmama’s StoryTable for the first time since COVID, and y’all said keep it going, so ---we are.
September’s show packs a punch. Look who’s joining the aunties: Guest Storyteller: Saloni Singh
Saloni is unapologetically large and loud, and writing is how she makes sense of it all. A self-declared introvert, for many years, her dog was her only audience—until a friend shoved her onto a stage, and everything changed. In less than three years, Saloni was crowned Moth Grandslam Champion, featured at prestigious festivals like the National Storytelling Festival and global podcasts like The Moth Radio Hour and Story Collider.
Guest Musicians: The Last of the Red Hot Mamas
Last of the Red Hot Mamas is a blues band built around the jazz-inspired, country-sauced songs of Amber Flame. Flame brings raunchy wordplay, constant hustle, and a heartbreaking love of the blues to contemporary issues of self-care, racial injustice, apocalypse survival, ethical non-monogamy, and post-church spirituality. Last of the RedHot Mamas features Roma Raye on bass, guitar, ukulele, and cabasa, Gabby Rivera on cajón, and Kristen Millares Young on vocals and tambourine. With the Jack Straw Cultural Center’s support, Last of the RedHot Mamas recorded their first ensemble studio album, *Magick Black Woman, Volume 1: the hustle.*
The three aunties are Olubayo Johnson, Kathya Alexander, and Mary Anne Moorman. For 15 years, they unveiled their friends, families, and histories, telling stories at Starbucks. Bound together in a generational constellation, and having a great desire to stop erasure with honest breathing tales, the Aunties bring lived stories to our listeners.
Olubayo is a beautiful wit of a writer, Kathya is an award-winning playwright, novelist, teacher, and Mary Anne is a storytelling radio host named Auntmama by a brood of stray children.
Theme of the show: Human Rights. All humans have rights. Children, elders, trans people, hillbillies, English speakers, and new-to-English speakers, plus everyone else. It’s a very simple concept, and we aim to keep it in focus.
