About the event

When Does a Person Become a You? Martin Buber on Encounter

Most of us know a great deal about the people around us. We observe their behavior, form impressions of their personalities, remember what they've done, and anticipate what they might do next.

But is knowing things *about* another person the same as actually *encountering* them?

In *I and You*, philosopher Martin Buber distinguishes between two fundamental ways of relating to the world. In an I–It relation, we encounter something as an object of experience: something we can observe, describe, understand, or use. In an I–You relation, the other is encountered as a whole presence with whom we stand in relation, rather than a collection of characteristics. Buber extends this idea beyond human relationships—to nature, spiritual life, and ultimately reality itself. He makes the startling claim that “all actual life is encounter.”

For this session of the Seattle Applied Wisdom Lab, we'll explore Buber's distinction through a short excerpt from *I and You*. We'll ask what an I–You encounter actually feels like, whether it can be deliberately cultivated, what prevents it, and what Buber's account might imply about the nature of selfhood and relationship.

No background in Buber or philosophy is required. Please read the short selection before attending and come prepared to examine the ideas seriously, including the possibility that Buber may be pointing toward something recognizable in your own experience.

The Seattle Applied Wisdom Lab is a small, structured discussion group exploring how philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, and wisdom traditions can inform lived practice.

This is not a lecture or debate club. Sessions emphasize close engagement with a shared reading, disciplined inquiry, and an attempt to understand unfamiliar perspectives before evaluating them.

Attendance is capped at 10 to maintain a high-quality discussion.

Please RSVP only if you plan to attend. If your plans change, please update your RSVP so someone else can attend.

Please arrive a few minutes early so we can begin on time.
