Reissuing Alexey Brodovitch’s Ballet:: Nina Holland in conversation with Katy Wan
About the event
Join us to celebrate Alexey Brodovitch’s iconic photobook, Ballet, with Nina Holland, publisher and director of Little Steidl, and curator Katy Wan.
Published in an edition of 500 in 1945, Ballet was Brodovitch’s only book of his own work. Much of the edition was destroyed in a fire and the exact number of extant copies is unknown. Brodovitch took the photographs between 1935 and 1939 during tours of the Ballets Russes to New York, an important document of dance history that has had a significant impact on the development of the photobook. Ballet was reissued by Little Steidl coinciding with its 80th anniversary, co-edited by Nina Holland and Joshua Chuang and printed by Holland. She will be in conversation with curator Katy Wan to explore Brodovitch's work and the book’s production history, focusing on the interpretative and artistic issues that are at stake in reissuing a photobook. The event will feature a display of a copy of Ballet from the 1945 edition and other historical photobooks in Tate's collection. Tate Library is a centre of excellence for art historical research, with holdings of over half a million publications on British art since 1500, and international art since 1900, including 30,000 artists’ books, photobooks, serials and zines, including the renowned Martin Parr Collection of photobooks.
