City of Literature Walking Tour

State Library Victoria

About the event

City of Literature is a 3-hour guided walking tour exploring how Melbourne became a city shaped by writers, readers, publishers and ideas. From early newspapers and publishing houses to bookshops, cafés and laneways filled with words and colour, this tour traces the literary life of the city across time. Created in partnership with Seniors in Melbourne, this relaxed small-group walking tour is ideal for retirees who want to explore the city at an easy pace, taking a wander through the lanes, alleys and arcades that reveal Melbourne’s past and shape its appeal today. Limited to a maximum group number of 10, the tours are led by Paul Daffey, a lifelong Melburnian, journalist and storyteller. His love of local history comes through in every step – whether he’s recounting tales from a century-old pub or pointing out a detail most people miss, Paul brings Melbourne’s characters, quirks and hidden corners to life.
