About Serpentine Sibyls: River Songs and Sea Shanties with Brian Dewan Artist Brian Dewan will perform sea shanties and river songs in dialogue with Serpentine Sibyls, Daniel Rothbart’s floating sculptural installation at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art at Snug Harbor. For approximately 40 minutes, he will sing traditional maritime ballads, work songs, and river songs, responding to the installation’s evocations of the enduring relationship between people and waterways. Performed in close proximity to the sculptures, Dewan’s program will create a conversation between sound and form, drawing connections between folk traditions, mythic imagery, and the rhythms of life on the water. This performance will be followed and accompanied by Daniel Rothbart’s Meditation | Mediation project. When: Saturday, August 22, 2026 | 3:00 PM - 5:00 PMWhere: The Pond (between P3 and P4) (View Directions and Site Map)Admission: Free (Registration Required) About Meditation | Meditation Much of Daniel Rothbart’s work focuses on collaborations with international artists who conceive and realize performance work with his sculptural objects. As part of his Meditation | Mediation project, Rothbart invites artists, poets, musicians, composers, and dancers to collaborate with him on short performances that engage with his vessel sculptures. These works probe boundaries of communication, question cultural stereotypes, and explore reflexive and meditative approaches to artmaking. Performances by invited artists will take place out of doors against the backdrop of the Serpentine Sibyls installation. Brian Dewan Bio Brian Dewan is a visual artist and musician.
