To win over the seven powerful generals loyal to Lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Ieyasu invites them to a tea party. These generals, however, have known war all their lives and have no idea of the proper manners required of a guest. They decide to follow the example of Hosokawa Tadaoki, who has had some experience. They do their best to follow his lead, but... Ido no Chawan (The Tea Bowl that Keeps Giving) A samurai discovers fifty ryo hidden inside a Buddhist statue he bought from a junk dealer. Both the original owner, a ronin (masterless samurai), and the buyer of the statue, the samurai, refuse to take the money. The junk dealer then proposes that the ronin give his own tea bowl to the samurai. This is a classic rakugo story about honesty and human decency. Idojawan (The Idojawan Tea Bowl) A dealer who once sold fake tea utensils to a man returns, this time carrying a supposedly legendary “Idojawan” tea bowl. However, the man's wife, with a keen eye for authenticity, arrives home just in time. This delightful Kyogen, written by antique ceramic specialist Honda Shizuo, features a brilliant battle of wits sparked by clashing aesthetic sensibilities.
