Expanded Cinema: Inner Time by Horațiu Rădulescu
About the event
Expanded Cinema is a series of performances that combine cinema with live music, movement, theatre, and more. Inner Time by Romanian composer Horațiu Rădulescu is a sonic ecology shaped by patterns found in the natural world, offering an ecstatic vision of interconnected sound, nature, and perception. Unlike most composers, Rădulescu was interested not in melodies, harmonies, and the standard elements of music, but in the idea that sound itself is an endless ocean of vibrations. Through this 30 minute performance for clarinet and electronics by Liam Hockley, we will dive into that ocean and hear the inner life of a sound: how it grows, interacts with its surroundings, and ultimately dies. This performance is guaranteed to expand your conceptions of what is possible within music and will open your ears to the complex life of even the simplest sounds. Accompanying the performance, Laine Butler will provide live visualization, bridging the sonic and the visual. Following the performance, there will be a Q&A session with both artists. Liam Hockley is a Canadian clarinetist and sound artist working across contemporary music, improvisation, and live electronics. He has performed across North America, Europe, and Asia, with appearances at the Stockhausen Courses, KLANGRAUM, Vancouver New Music, and Music on Main. His debut album Pulse-Tide was named one of The Wire’s 10 best Modern Classical releases of 2024, which praised it as “vigorous and forensic, grappling with this music’s overall physicality, while also paying microscopic attention to its fine details, its agitated particles and molecular trails.” Liam holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of British Columbia. Laine Butler is an audiovisual and multidisciplinary artist, musician and designer. Active within Vancouver's underground arts and music scenes since 2010, Butler works across sound, visuals, and community-building. He is deeply committed to supporting emerging and equity-seeking artists through organizations such as Chapel Sound Arts Foundation. He has collaborated with artists across North America, including Michael Gary Dean, Ruby Singh, Dean Grenier, ephemeral objects, and Modern Biology.
