About the event

Let’s consider:

1. What do we mean by "community"? Is it defined by shared place, shared interests, shared obligations, or something else? 2. Many people say they want more community but find it hard to build. What do you think makes it difficult today, and are those obstacles mainly personal, cultural, or structural? 3. What distinguishes a gathering that feels meaningful from one that feels routine or empty? Is meaningfulness something a host can design, or does it depend on the people who show up? 4. Does giving a gathering a clear, specific purpose, even one some people might disagree with, strengthen community or make it more exclusive? 5. Groups seem to need a balance between the individual and the collective: too much emphasis on the group risks conformity, too little leaves a loose collection of individuals. Where do you see that balance tipping in your own communities? 6. Some argue that the current emphasis on personal boundaries and self-care protects individuals; others argue it weakens our obligations to one another. How should we weigh what we owe ourselves against what we owe the groups we belong to? 7. Should hosts take on authority to shape how people interact (setting rules, steering conversation), or does that undermine the openness that makes a gathering welcoming? 8. Is gathering with people who disagree with us a civic responsibility, a personal choice, or neither? What conditions make those gatherings productive rather than divisive?

No homework required, but if you’d like to reflect ahead of time, you can watch or listen to this podcast episode:

• Ezra Klein Show: Is Your Social Life Missing Something? This Conversation Is for You. • Priya Parker, the author of “The Art of Gathering,” shares her advice for orchestrating more meaningful gatherings and why that matters for our civic life, as well as our social lives. • NYT Link: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/03/opinion/ezra-klein-podcast-priya-parker.html • Direct available in a comment below for attendees.

Shy Philosopher Night Procedure and Code of Ethics: 1. Discussion Style We aim for a cooperative flow, like passing a ball among teammates rather than engaging in back-and-forth debates. Please share the “ball” so everyone has a voice. 2. Brief Points (2-3 Minutes) Keep points concise so we can hear a variety of perspectives. Occasional exceptions may come up naturally, but our goal is inclusivity. 3. No Crosstalk Respect the speaker’s time without interjecting or questioning mid-speech. If you’d like to add something, simply raise your hand and the facilitator will guide the flow. 4. Avoid Ad Hominem Remarks Focus critiques on ideas, actions, or beliefs—not people. For example, say “This idea could have certain impacts” rather than “You’re wrong.” This ensures a respectful environment. 5. Respectful Engagement As we are guests in someone’s home, let’s maintain a high level of respect for the space and one another. Mindfulness, patience, and courtesy are essential to making this gathering comfortable and enjoyable for all. 6. Cancellation Courtesy If your plans change and you’re unable to attend, please let us know at least a day in advance by canceling your RSVP. Since space is limited, early notice helps ensure that someone else interested can join in your place. We really appreciate your understanding and help in making this a smooth, inclusive experience for everyone.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
