October short story meetup: mystery story curated by Leisha

Welcome to our October short story & social meetup! This month we will be reading a mystery text selected by book club organizer Leisha. This is the first chapter of a novel, but also works as a short story. This story comes with a challenge. We're not telling you what the novel is that the text is excerpted from. The challenge is - can you guess what book it is? Please don't use AI or Google text search, that would be cheating;-) If you guess it, keep it to yourself and make a note of where in the text you realized! We'll compare our notes at the meetup:-)

We'll give you one hint to help you guess: *The author of this novel in later years deeply regretted writing it.* This is something that may be an interesting focal point of our discussion.

This meetup will take place in person at Bristol Pub in downtown Oslo. They serve a large selection of drinks and offer both snacks and food.
