Is this your event?About the event
Scan, cut, layer, slice-and-mix your family albums. Wedge the lace curtain in a narrow opening of the brown leather armchair. Blue glitter glue on a Persian carpet. Pinch grandma’s plastic grapes between your fingers and record the clicky sound of her plastic covered TV remote control.
This DIY filmmaking workshop is an explosion of a memory box; household ephemera are your characters and Reddit family lore is your story. You arrange the objects to a story about a widowed auntie who smells like cigarettes and febreeze and runs her long acrylic nails through her black hair. Or someone’s great uncle who was a government spy during the cold war. Or if you want - bring your own family lore and illustrate it as you want.
This is a drop-in session starting from 6pm. The recommended activity duration is 45 minutes to get a proper feel of stop-motion and DIY filmmaking. At 7pm and 8pm there will be a short presentation by artist & filmmaker Parwana Haydar’s tools and methodology in her filmmaking practice.
Born in Afghanistan and based in London filmmaker and artist Parwana Haydar explores themes such as memory, archives and mythology through her film and research practice. She is a co-curator of AVAH (Afghan Visual Arts and History) Collective, an independent curatorial collective and multimedia platform for artists from Afghanistan and its diaspora. Her films have been presented at Goethe Institute ImExil festival, Eigenheim Gallery, Qyzqaras film festival and most recently at Somerset House. She is currently working with AVAH toward the publication of their seminal art book: On Collecting - an innovative, unconventional archive documentation comprising family photos, textiles, household objects, and more - narrating personal, intimate, inclusive and peripheral stories of collective Afghan histories. She has curated films and talks at institutions such as Void Gallery in Derry, HKW in Berlin and BAM x ArtEast in New York Part of Upgrade Yourself Takeover: Jenkin van Zyl.
