About the event
Type Brigade is Vancouver’s typography meetup. Join us at the BCIT Downtown Campus: • Doors at 6:30pm • Talks begin at 7:00pm Please note that any guests you’d like to bring with you should register on the Meetup group themselves. Join us for our biggest Type Brigade event of the year, part of [Design Vancouver Festival](https://designvancouver.org), September 17—27, 2026. Speakers Jesse Shaw – Type in Movement [jesseshaw.ca](https://jesseshaw.ca) Jesse is the Senior Motion Designer at Rethink Design, where he crafts award-winning motion identities rooted in kinetic typography. With over a decade of experience bringing brand systems to life, his work has been recognized globally at Cannes, D&AD, ADCC, and the Webby Awards, among others. Drawing directly from his work with iconic brands like KD and A&W, alongside collaborations with type foundries like OH no Type Co, Letters from Sweden and Dalton Maag, his talk explores how letterforms act as the structural and emotional blueprint for motion identities. He will demonstrate how designers can strategically align movement and typography to tell cohesive, compelling brand stories. Isaías Loaiza – Bold Moves: Shifting Type from Letters to Branding [enigma.mx](https://enigma.mx/) What if a typeface could do more for a brand than simply give it a distinctive voice? This talk explores how custom type can become an active part of a brand system: not just matching its personality, but expanding what the identity can do. Through real-world projects, we’ll look at typefaces that incorporate icons and emojis, unconventional variable axes that transform letterforms to match different messages and moods, and modular systems that turn type into patterns, textures, frames, and graphic elements. Jaime Martínez – Value Becomes Brand: Building Identity from the Real Thing [enigma.mx](https://enigma.mx/) What makes a product truly different, and how can that difference shape its visual identity? Using Glyphs’ brand positioning and visual identity as a case study, this talk walks through the fundamentals of positioning: identifying real competitors, uncovering a product’s real value, and understanding who cares about it most. We’ll then see how those strategic decisions directly shaped Glyphs’ new identity, from its visual language to a toolkit that turns real interface elements into brand assets, bringing its new positioning, “Create Fonts. Love the Process,” to life.
