This course surveys major film productions from multiple cinematographic centers between the mid-1930s and early 1940s. It examines leading directors, works that became classics, and the emergence of Brazilian cinema. Emphasis is placed on screenwriting's role in sound-integrated narratives and the creative expansion brought by color technology. The course traces early signs of classical language exhaustion and how World War II reshaped cinematic perception of reality.
Schedule:
10 September 2026 – Session 1: Core elements of classical film language and sound's impact on cinematography. Screenwriting function and characteristics. Studio system and the height of Hollywood's star system.
17 September 2026 – Session 2: German cinema and Nazi propaganda. Soviet state control of cinema. French contributions to the transition toward modern cinema. British documentary school and fiction filmmakers gaining Hollywood attention. Cinematic infrastructure under Italian fascism. Productions from other European centers.
24 September 2026 – Session 3: Asian cinema (Japan, China, India). Mexican cinema. Brazilian cinema from its origins through Atlântida's founding. Color technology in Hollywood. McCarthyist censorship and persecution. 1930s productions: musicals, melodrama, social critique, and animation.
01 October 2026 – Session 4: Hollywood's golden years, major directors, and film genres: screwball comedies, westerns, historical sagas, social commentary, musicals, war dramas, horror, and film noir.
Instructor: Iara Baptista Pasta — degrees in History and Social Communication (bachelor's); specialization in Communication and Education from Universidade de São Paulo; cinema studies from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (Extension) and seminars with film critics Inácio Araújo (Folha de São Paulo) and Marcelo Lyra (O Estado de São Paulo and Jornal da Tarde).
