Water as a Common Ground: Notes from a Majlis
About the event
Join us for Water as Common Ground: Notes from a Majlis, a symposium exploring climate-affected water systems, their vulnerable ecologies, and the imaginaries that socially engaged artistic practice can open in relation to them. Convened in collaboration with Visible Project, the programme bring together more than fifteen artists, scientists, legal thinkers, and researchers across for a series of public consultation and presentations. The public programme is preceded by a closed working session, held in the format of a Majlis al-Shura, a consultative assembly rooted in Arab traditions of mutual deliberation. Artists and artist-collectives bring a live, concrete question from their practice, which a convened group of respondents takes up in turn. The day produces presentations that are carried into the public symposium. These public exchanges trace different waterways and the communities organised around them, from the Tigris River, the Al Ahsa oasis, to the forests of the Western Ghats. The programme explores ancestral and economic relationships to water, disappearing geographies, hydraulic justice, and the colonial legacies of ecological control. Full symposium programme to follow soon. Participating artists and experts include Sherko Abbas, Dr. Aaron Bartholomew, Dr. Rohan D’Souza, Maghras, Andreas Philippopoulos-Mihalopoulos, Waral Prakalp, and Khalil Walji. The programme continues the next day with Waterlands, Elemental Dreams, an exploration of water mythologies and poetics. SEE ALL EVENTS
