"Homeland" is the latest, long-awaited film by Oscar® laureate Paweł Pawlikowski, creator of "Ida" and "Cold War", which will compete for one of the world's most prestigious film awards - the Palme d'Or at this year's 79th Cannes International Film Festival.
Pawlikowski's previous film, "Cold War", also distributed in Poland by Kino Świat, achieved spectacular international success (52 awards and 126 nominations, including an Oscar® nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director and Best Cinematography) and won the hearts of Polish audiences, attracting over 1 million viewers to cinemas.
In his latest work, as in "Ida" and "Cold War", the director tackles themes of identity, guilt, family and love against the backdrop of chaos and moral disorientation in post-war Europe. The lead roles feature Oscar® nominee Sandra Hüller ("The Zone of Interest", "Anatomy of a Fall", "Hail Mary Project") and Hanns Zischler ("Munich"). The screenplay was written by Paweł Pawlikowski and Henk Handloegten. For the film's realization, the director once again invited his long-time creative team – Oscar® nominee cinematographer Łukasz Żal ("Hamnet"), costume designer Aleksandra Staszko ("Altar Boys") and set designers Katarzyna Sobańska and Marcel Sławiński ("The Doll"). "Homeland" tells the story of the relationship between Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler), Nobel Prize laureate in Literature, and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller) – an actress and writer.
The action takes place during the height of the Cold War. Father and daughter embark on a difficult, emotionally charged journey in a black Buick through devastated Germany – from Frankfurt under American control to Weimar under Soviet influence. For the first time since the end of the war, Mann returns to his homeland, after having made the difficult decision to emigrate to the United States earlier. The film's producers are: Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli (OUR Films), Ewa Puszczyńska (Extreme Emotions), Jeanne Tremsal and Edward Berger (Nine Hours),...
