ROUND TABLE SESSIONS History, Ideas & Society
*#01 — How Did Europe Come to Dominate the World?*

WHAT TO EXPECT
Round Table Sessions are small, guided conversations for people who are curious about history and the big ideas behind it.
We might gather in a park with a map spread out in front of us, around a table in a quiet café or bar, or anywhere that gives a small group the space to think and talk.
I’ll bring the historical context, questions and some visual material to guide us through the subject — but this isn’t a conventional lecture. With a small group (5-8 people), questions, disagreements and discussion are encouraged throughout.
No previous knowledge is required — just curiosity.

THIS SESSION
Around 1500, European domination of the world was far from inevitable.
Yet over the following four centuries, a relatively small and politically fragmented continent expanded its influence across the globe, eventually producing some of the most powerful empires the world had ever seen.
Why Europe? Why then? And how did it happen?
That is the question we’ll explore in our first Round Table Session.

THE SPIRIT OF THE ROUND TABLE
We want to explore complex questions openly, without turning every discussion into a contemporary political argument.
History inevitably involves politics, ideology, religion, power and uncomfortable subjects. We won’t avoid them. But we’re here to understand and investigate, not to campaign.
Different interpretations are welcome. Personal attacks, political campaigning and ideological proselytising are not.
And one principle matters especially:
You should be able to explore an idea without being assumed to endorse it.
Come curious. Challenge ideas. Be willing to question your own.

OUR MOTTO
Doubt over dogma. Curiosity over certainty. Inquiry over ideology.
