Imperfect Perfection: Making Without a Map

Daniel Banks, Artist Workshop What happens when we stop asking a work to be perfect—or even asking it to become something we already recognize? Artist and designer Daniel Banks begins many of his paintings with broad layers of black paint and no predetermined subject. He looks, turns the work, responds, covers and uncovers, allowing its direction to emerge through the process rather than imposing an outcome from the beginning.
In this hands-on creative lab, participants gather around a shared table to work through layering, scraping, rotating, limiting the palette and responding to what appears. The emphasis is not on producing a technically accomplished painting, but on noticing possibilities, making decisions and allowing uncertainty to become part of the work.
At a moment when social media and artificial intelligence increasingly offer us images of frictionless perfection, Imperfect Perfection makes space for the visible human trace: hesitation, revision, accident, discovery and the unexpected turn that gives a work its life.
This is not a traditional painting class. It is an accessible exploration of creative process for anyone curious about making without already knowing where they are going. No previous art experience is needed, and all materials are included.
