In Martin Scorsese's After Hours, computer programmer Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) experiences a night he will never forget. What begins as an adventurous outing to the artistic SoHo district of New York quickly escalates into a series of bizarre and terrifying situations. He meets eccentric characters, gets entangled in misunderstandings, and just cannot seem to find his way back home.
Comedy and fear in one film
Scorsese himself described After Hours as a film about sexual angst, but at the same time, it is a dark comedy. The film plays cleverly with tension and humor. Griffin Dunne portrays a despairing antihero, and Rosanna Arquette plays one of the intriguing women he encounters along the way.
A remarkable film in Scorsese's career
After Hours from 1985 marks a turning point in Scorsese's career. After the disappointing reception of The King of Comedy, he considered quitting filmmaking. This script gave him new energy. The film won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival. You can see it at Lab111 in Amsterdam, a cinema with a focus on exceptional cinematic work.
