The Science of Anti-Aging: How to Hack Your Immune System (tickets on LUMA)
About the event
Most aging research looks at what breaks down. But what happens when you look at at what could be fixed?

A lot of what makes stem cells "old" comes down to a loss of internal structure, cells losing their sense of orientation, and the immune system plays a bigger role in that decline than anyone expected. Correct that structure, and old cells start behaving like they are young again.
In this Growth Lab LIVE session, we'll dig into what the immune system actually has to do with getting older, and how close we really are to turning these findings into something that helps humans age better, not just longer.
Join us for an evening with M. Carolina Florian, ICREA Research Professor and Group Leader of the Stem Cell Aging lab at IDIBELL in Barcelona, breaking down one of the more genuinely exciting threads in longevity science right now. It's not science fiction either. Her research team has already rejuvenated stem cells in aged mice, restoring vitality and extending their lifespan. The work was significant enough that Nature ran a feature on it.
What You'll Learn:
• Why ageing was long assumed to be one-way, and what her lab's research does to challenge that • How losing internal structure inside a cell, not just wear and tear, drives stem cell ageing • The surprising role your immune system plays in how fast your cells age • What it actually means to "rejuvenate" a stem cell, and what her mouse studies showed when they did it • How close (or far) we really are from applying any of this to humans, without the hype
About the Speaker:
Dr M. Carolina Florian is an ICREA Research Professor and leads the Stem Cell Aging group at IDIBELL in Barcelona. Her lab studies why our stem cells lose the ability to regenerate tissue as we get older, and whether that decline can be reversed. Her team has shown that boosting stem cell regeneration with a drug can extend life expectancy in mice, and she holds a patent on treating ageing-related diseases. She trained in Milan and at the University of Ulm in Germany, where she led her own group before moving to Barcelona in 2018. Her work has been featured in Nature and funded by the European Commission and Fundación "la Caixa".
Agenda:
• 1845h - Doors open • 1900h - Talk starts • 2015h - Q&A • 2045h - Drinks & Networking
