Discussion on democracy and Sweden after the election

The election is over. The ballots have been cast, the campaigns have ended, and the voters have had their say. Now comes the question of what it all meant - and where Sweden goes from here.

Democracy promises that we, the people, can govern our own country: that we can exercise our sovereignty, hold those in power accountable and determine our own future.

But how well does that promise hold up in reality? Looking back at the election, what actually shaped the result? Was it the issues people care most about, confidence in particular parties and politicians, economic interests, traditional and social media, or something else? And now that the votes have been counted, how much influence will ordinary citizens have over what happens next?

Sweden is also an increasingly multi-ethnic, multi-religious and culturally diverse country, made up of groups with different values, identities and interests. Do we vote primarily according to the interests of the groups we belong to? Or is there still some idea of a common good - something beyond our individual and group interests that we can collectively strive towards?

The election may be over, but the issues remain. Immigration and integration, crime and punishment, healthcare, education, the economy, energy, climate, defence and Sweden's place in an increasingly uncertain world. What did the election tell us about how Swedes view these questions? And what direction will the country now take?

So, with the 2026 election behind us, let's take stock. How did it go? What did we learn? Where is Sweden heading - and where should we go from here?

What does the election result tell us about Sweden today?

What is the state of Swedish democracy?

How much power do ordinary citizens really have?

What are the most important issues facing Sweden now?

What political and social changes are likely to follow the election?

What kind of country do we want Sweden to become?

And can democracy actually help us get there?
