(De)tours: Centering Affect, Speculation, and Collective Liberation in Public History workshop

(De)tours: Decolonizing Public History is an interactive workshop led by Sofía Martínez, Director of Memoria (De)colonial, exploring how public history can challenge colonial narratives through critical walking tours, collaborative research, and community-centered storytelling. Using Old San Juan as a case study, participants will examine how official narratives often overlook histories of imperialism, displacement, and ongoing colonialism, and how heritage sites can instead become spaces for critical dialogue and collective memory. By connecting the past to present-day struggles for land, housing, racial justice, and self-determination, the workshop invites artists, educators, and community members to imagine more inclusive and liberatory approaches to history through discussion, reflection, and participatory exercises.
