Make Your Own Traditional White Paint “Gofun”!

Have you ever wondered how traditional Japanese paintings are made?

In this workshop, we’ll explore gofun (胡粉), a traditional white pigment used in Japanese painting.

But we’re not just going to paint with it — we’ll make the paint ourselves!

We’ll start with gofun in powder form and learn how it is traditionally prepared and turned into paint.

After making the paint, we’ll experiment with it on paper: How does it feel? What happens when you make it thicker or thinner? What kind of texture can you create?

Finally, you’ll use what you discovered to create a small artwork on Japanese shikishi board to take home.

There’s no need to be good at drawing, and no experience with Japanese painting is required.

This is not a serious painting class — think of it more like a small Japanese painting experiment lab where we can touch, mix, paint, and discover together.

日本画 実験室 #01

胡粉（日本画の白い絵具）をつくってみよう！

日本画って、どんな絵具を使って描くか知っていますか？

今回の「日本画 実験室」では、日本画で使われる白い絵具 「胡粉（ごふん）」 を、粉の状態から実際に自分たちで作ってみます。

絵具ができたら、紙の上でいろいろ実験。

薄く塗ったり、重ねたり、筆跡や質感を楽しんだり。 最後は、実験した表現を使って小さな色紙に作品を1枚制作して持ち帰ります。

絵が得意でなくても大丈夫です。 日本画を描いたことがない方も大歓迎！

日本画を本格的に「習う」というより、珍しい日本画の材料をみんなで触って、作って、実験してみるワークショップです。
