HOPE Framework for Neurodiversity - Intro Session
About the event
Think of a person, a place or a moment that made you feel safe, seen and capable. HOPE starts there. HOPE stands for Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences. Paediatrician Robert Sege and colleagues in the US developed it from research showing that positive experiences protect our health and wellbeing, even when life has also been hard.
HOPE does not stop at asking what went wrong. It asks what helps us grow, and how we create more of it.
HOPE rests on four building blocks. Relationships: warm, supportive connection with others. Environments: safe, stable and equitable places to live, learn, work and play. Engagement: belonging to a community and contributing to it. Emotional growth: building social and emotional skills, like knowing yourself and working through challenges together.
HOPE began with children and families. New research now looks at Positive Adult Experiences, and the early findings are encouraging. Positive experiences in adulthood link to lower anxiety and depression, even for people who had a difficult start. That matters for us. Many of us grew up feeling out of place.
A space like this group where we meet, recognise each other and contribute can become one of those positive experiences.
HOPE gives us a shared language to build that space on purpose. This session opens a process. HOPE will become the main framework for how we host our gatherings, and I want us to shape it together. I bring my first ideas. You bring yours. Over time, this framework belongs to all of us: a tool you take into your own life, and a way to host, hold and support the group from different roles.
