Rainy Day Bioacoustics: Listening to Birds with R
About the event
As the Vancouver rain sets in, getting out into the field to listen to birds gets a bit trickier—but we can still tune in from the comfort of R! In this hands-on workshop, Sunny will introduce essential R packages designed for bioacousticians. We will walk through extracting bird sounds from Xeno-Canto, running machine learning models like BirdNET to detect species, and visualizing acoustic results—all within R! Along the way, we'll explore beautiful bird vocalizations and spotlight common Pacific Northwest species you hear around Vancouver, from the cheerful songs of Song Sparrows and Black-capped Chickadees to the ever-present Crows.
