The Making Mind at Jameel Arts Centre
About the event
The Making Mind is a creative learning programme for children aged 6–12, where making becomes a way of thinking. Developed by award-winning designer Carla Baz and hosted at Jameel Arts Centre, the Foundation Programme invites children to learn through observation, experimentation and hands-on making. Across three progressive seasons — Learn to Observe, Learn to Make and Learn to Belong — children develop creative confidence, material intelligence and the ability to explore ideas, work through uncertainty and communicate their thinking. At the heart of the programme is the Creative Loop™ — See, Imagine, Make, Refine, Share — a process children return to throughout the year as they encounter new materials, questions and ways of working. No prior art or design experience is required. The programme welcomes children with different interests, abilities and ways of thinking, placing emphasis on curiosity, process and learning through making. The Foundation Programme is a year-long enrolment, allowing children to build these habits progressively over time. Fees are paid in three termly instalments, with one payment per term. The Pilot Year begins in September 2026 at Jameel Arts Centre, with sessions held on Friday afternoons. Registration Registration opens Monday, 17 August and closes Friday, 4 September 2026. Places for the Pilot Year are limited, with small cohorts designed to allow for meaningful individual attention, dialogue and making. Registration takes place through The Making Mind website. For any questions or queries, feel free to email [email protected] About Carla Baz Carla Baz is an internationally recognised designer and the founder of The Making Mind. Over more than a decade, she has built a practice spanning collectible design, furniture and objects, with work exhibited internationally and shaped by a longstanding engagement with materials, craft and contemporary making. Her experience as both a designer and a mother shaped the thinking behind The Making Mind. Drawing on the ways designers observe, question, experiment, make and refine, Carla developed the programme to translate this studio perspective into a framework for children — nurturing curiosity, resilience, agency and confidence through the process of making.
