Grupo Flama, an ensemble of young artists, launches its inaugural production with Papai Está na Atlântida, written by Mexican playwright Javier Malpica. Directed by Enzo Malaquias, the show opens 22 de agosto on Saturday at Complexo Cultural Funarte São Paulo at 20h, continuing through 6 de setembro with performances Saturdays at 20h and Sundays at 17h. Thaís Gontijo and Matheus Mattiusch play two orphaned siblings who pursue their father's quest for the American dream. The story examines immigration through a playful children's lens, engaging both adult audiences and younger viewers. Left with their grandmother after their mother's death, the siblings watch their father depart for the United States with promises of return. As weeks pass without his arrival, the grandmother's sudden passing forces them to decide: remain unwelcome dependents with relatives or follow their father into their own search for promised land. Malpica crafts a vivid character landscape, depicting sibling bonds with depth and nuance, particularly given his young protagonists. They shoulder challenges inappropriate to their years, yet find strength in each other and demonstrate profound mutual devotion. Political dimensions anchor the work, gaining urgency through a child's perspective. Across 10 scenes, the pair experiences an almost complete lifetime, each developing distinct personality traits as they mature, each learning from and protecting the other.
