Words That Last: An Evening with Keiko Honda
About the event
Some things you only learn by staying long enough. That silence is not the absence of language but another form of it. That the body carries its own grammar, older than words. That a rain chain, a teacup, a daughter's silence — attended to honestly — can become literature itself. Join us for a workshop led by local author Keiko Honda. Words That Last is Keiko’s third memoir — and her most searching. A longtime Vancouver resident and civic arts practitioner, Honda brings this intimate evening home to Dunbar, the neighbourhood where much of this book was lived and written. Following the brush through Bashō's karumi (lightness), Shōnagon's okashi (delighted noticing), and the everyday objects that quietly hold a life together, she traces what remains when the expected life falls away, and whether what remains is enough to build from. An evening of reading, reflection, and conversation about what we carry, what endures, and what it means to pay attention. Paper and pencils will be provided for participants to engage with Keiko and try out these techniques for themselves. Book sales and signing to follow.
