About the event

GENERAL OBJECTIVE To present an in-depth study of Baroque and Rococo art through the analysis of museological collections in the city of São Paulo, discussing how different institutions preserve works, objects and documents fundamental to understanding European and Brazilian visual culture between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The course proposes a reflection on the relationships between art, religion, power, imagination and society, observing the circulation of styles, artists, techniques and symbolic models between Europe and Portuguese America. The proposal seeks to understand Baroque as an artistic, religious and political language, analyzing paintings, sculptures, furniture, sacred imagery, liturgical objects, portraits, historical documents and architectures preserved in São Paulo museums. The course also intends to discuss the formation of Brazilian historical and artistic heritage, collecting practices and processes of cultural memory preservation. By integrating Art History, Cultural History, Religion, Anthropology and Heritage, the course encourages its participants to develop a critical reading of museological collections as spaces for symbolic construction of memory and cultural identity. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES – Present Baroque and Rococo as artistic and cultural languages; – Analyze paintings, sculptures, religious imagery and liturgical objects present in São Paulo collections; – Identify continuities and transformations between European and Brazilian Baroque; – Understand museums as spaces for preservation, interpretation and construction of cultural memory; – Encourage interdisciplinary research in Art History, History, Anthropology, Sociology, Philosophy and Cultural Heritage; – Develop critical readings on artistic circulation, religiosity and visual culture between Europe and colonial Brazil. CONTENT August 15, 2026 CLASS 1 – European Baroque and Rococo at MASP São Paulo Museum of Art Assis Chateaubriand Location: Avenida Paulista, 1578 – Bela Vista – São Paulo/SP Study of the museum's European collections as a tool for understanding Baroque and Rococo in Europe between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The class will discuss the context of the Counter-Reformation, Baroque theatricality, courtly culture and the international circulation of artistic models. Works and themes for analysis: – Italian, French, Spanish and Flemish Baroque paintings; – aristocratic portraits and representation of power; – dramaticity, chiaroscuro and Baroque theatricality; – religiosity, martyrdom and Christian imagination; – French Rococo and culture of courtly delicacy; – circulation of artists and aesthetic models in modern Europe; September 12, 2026 CLASS 2 – European Baroque and Rococo at Casa Museu Ema Klabin – free admission Fundação Ema Klabin Location: Rua Portugal, 43 – Jardim Europa – São Paulo/SP The class will address the formation of private collecting in Brazil and the preservation of objects related to European Baroque and Rococo. The residence-museum allows for understanding the international circulation of artworks, furniture and decorative objects linked to cultural elites. Elements for analysis: – European Baroque and Rococo furniture; – porcelain, silverware and decorative objects; – religious paintings and aristocratic portraits; – European sacred art in the collection; – ornamentation, luxury and courtly life; – Rococo aesthetics and culture of intimacy; October 17, 2026 CLASS 3 – Colonial São Paulo and Baroque religious culture at Museu do Pátio do Colégio Museu Anchieta – Pátio do Colégio Location: Praça Pátio do Colégio, 2 – Historic Center – São Paulo/SP Study of the formation of colonial São Paulo and religious practices associated with the Jesuits. The class will discuss the presence of Baroque culture in Portuguese America through documents, liturgical objects, religious images and architectural elements preserved by the museum.
