About the event

# #Data Behind the Masterpieces: A Unofficial Data Visualization Tour of the National Gallery of Art Presenter: Keith Krut, National Gallery of Art Museums are constantly generating and applying countless datapoints, supporting visitor experience and strategic insights in ways that will continue to accelerate with AI. The National Gallery of Art's Analytics and Enterprise Architecture Team has been leading unofficial tours of these sources and uses of data over the past several years, and past participants have reported that afterwards they saw museums through a whole new lens. Join our data scientists for this customized tour followed by demonstrations and discussion of the National Gallery's data analytics products and strategy. We’ll start with a walking tour that explores the museum through the lens of data. Instead of examining artistic movements or historical context, we'll point out the sensors and invisible systems that make a world-class museum possible: the metadata, digital collections, visualization tools, audience interfaces, and information architecture that help preserve, organize, interpret, and share art with millions of visitors. Along the way, we'll discuss how museums are exploring emerging technologies like AI. Following the gallery tour, we'll gather for demonstrations and discussion of some of the National Gallery's internal data products and analyses, as well as how these are used in planning and decision-support. Group questions and ideas are welcome. This is not an official museum tour or an art history lecture. Instead, it is a conversation about information design, visual thinking, technology, and the fascinating intersection of art and data. Whether you're a facilitator, graphic recorder, designer, librarian, researcher, technologist, or simply curious about how complex organizations make sense of enormous amounts of information, you'll leave seeing museums—and perhaps data itself—in an entirely new way.
