Writing Workshop: When Artists Write
About the event
The Jameel Library presents When Artists Write, a three-part writing workshop led by Hafsa Hariga of Insan Cultural Consulting. Taking place across three Saturdays in October, the workshop considers storytelling not as an added layer of presentation, but as a cultural practice that shapes how work is understood, shared and remembered. Working through selected readings and hands-on exercises, participants will engage with storytelling frameworks drawn from the writings and practices of artists from the region, including Fateh Moudarres, Inji Efflatoun, Jalal Toufic and Sophia Al-Maria, alongside established narrative methodologies. Reading materials will be provided in advance of each session, so that workshop time is dedicated to discussion, practical writing exercises and collective reflection. The first session explores the value of artists’ writing and the importance of hearing from those who give form to thought through paint, sculpture, moving images and gesture, considering what words reveal alongside the works they create. Through readings and discussions of texts by artists based in the region, participants will reflect on these connections before drafting an initial account of their own practice, project or research. The second session introduces the SUCCESs framework from Made to Stick by Chip Heath and Dan Heath, alongside the four elements of great storytelling from The Storytelling Edge by Shane Snow and Joe Lazauskas. Guided writing and presentation exercises offer opportunities to put these ideas into practice. In the final session, participants revisit, refine and present their original drafts, reflecting collectively on how their narratives have developed. The workshop is designed for artists, curators, and cultural practitioners who want to articulate their work with greater clarity and specificity. Over three sessions, participants will develop practical tools for shaping a compelling narrative, communicating more confidently with audiences and institutions, and drawing on the storytelling traditions of SWANA-based artists and writers. Sessions: Saturday, 17 Oct 2026 Saturday, 24 Oct 2026 and Saturday, 31 Oct 2026. Registration is required, as space is limited. Participants are expected to attend all three sessions. The library will provide reading materials in advance of each session.
