Art of conversation: 10-minute Talk
About the event
Join the National Gallery's Erin Golding for a thought-provoking 10-minute talk inspired by our exhibition 'Yinka Shonibare and Thomas Gainsborough: A Conversation'. How should we converse with art? For many people, stepping into a gallery can feel intimidating. Perhaps you're worried you don't know enough, aren't familiar with art history, or don't have the 'right' interpretation. 'Art of conversation' challenges these assumptions, exploring how we can all build meaningful relationships with works of art regardless of our knowledge, background or experience. Should we focus on an artist's intentions? The information on the label? The views of those around us? Or should we begin with our own experiences, perspectives and questions? Drawing on her own personal connections and reflections, Erin invites visitors to consider the many ways we make meaning from art, and why our individual viewpoints matter. Through an accessible and engaging exploration of looking, questioning and interpretation, this short talk celebrates the idea that there is no single way to engage with a painting – and that everyone has something valuable to bring to the conversation.
