The story centers on Marketa, an innocent yeoman’s daughter destined for a convent but abducted by a rival clan of bandits. Her romance with the bandit Mikoláš serves as the foundation for a complex historical mosaic. Weaving together multiple characters and subplots, the film depicts a bleak, brutal vision of the early Middle Ages where paganism clashes with Christianity, and love battles hate. Backed by years of meticulous research, it was the most expensive Czech film of the 1960s, and its artistic value remains enduring today.
