Overview: Pixar Animation Studios has set the gold standard for stories that captivate audiences across cultural and generational lines.
If you've ever wondered how they manage to craft such amazing stories, then this meetup can provide insights to help improve your own writing.
First, we will discuss the Core Concepts that are generally necessary to write any type of story.
Then, we will deconstruct various Pixar movies as examples of how they integrate these timeless story concepts with their own storytelling style to tap into the universal human experience.
With that foundation of concepts and examples, we will then practice applying this knowledge in writing exercises to improve our own story craft techniques.
There will be spoilers of Pixar movies, as necessary, to discuss plot developments.
SCHEDULE
(Initial 15-30 minutes) *Meet & Greet, Introductions, make small talk, pay the Attendance Fee, and wait for late arrivals.
(About 1 hour) *Story Craft Core Concepts* This a primer course on the fundamental elements of storywriting, and by necessity I will have to give a casual sort of lecture to cover a great deal of information expediently, so please keep any questions until the Discussion portion. Topics covered: \ ~Narrative Voice: POV, Verb Tense, Tone, Diction Level, etc \~ 4 (or modernized to 7) Main Types of Story Conflict explained \ ~Narrative Structure: 3-Act, 4-Act, 5-Act, Freytag's Pyramid, etc \~ Plot Points: Inciting Incident, Midpoint, 'Dark Night of the Soul', etc \ ~Character Arc, Character Templates, Protagonist to Deuteragonist to Antagonist relationship \~ Setting as Character \ ~How to write an Opening Scene \~ When NOT to use "Show, Don't Tell" \ ~and much more

(About 1 hour) *Pixar Movies Discussion with Q&A and Writing Exercises* This will be a discussion of the storywriting choices and techniques that work in their movies, and most importantly, how to apply these principles to your own writing. As well, each workshop will focus on one movie for a Deep Dive Deconstruction (D3) study so you can see these principles in action. Feel free to ask any questions regarding Core Concepts or examples that we discuss. We will start practicing some concepts with easy writing exercises.

(About 1-1.5 hours) *Practical Application of Concepts & Techniques* We will spend the remaining time on in-depth application of specific concepts and examples to your own writing and/or any WIP that you brought to work on. I will answer any questions you have, or give individual feedback if you'd like, as we go through various writing exercises.
*Optional - Critique & Feedback: if you want to get other people's perspectives, then you can read aloud what you wrote. However, you are NOT required to share your work, so don't feel pressure to get feedback if you do not want it.
Some info about me: I'm a student of the writing craft who's read and applied concepts from over a hundred books on how to write fiction, a veteran of creative writing programs, and a semi-pro author (ie, published online and making some money but not enough to write full-time yet).
