Ranshima Bound (Camera Japan)
About the event
Yoshio, a lonely punk musician, saves a woman from the river and takes her along as a fake wife to his family in the Japanese film Ranshima Bound, showing at Lab111 in Amsterdam. A Japanese indie film about family and unexpected connection
In Ranshima Bound by director Yoshitaka Kamada, the lonely punk musician Yoshio returns to his hometown after years. The reason: his mother is in the hospital following a suicide attempt. Along the way, he takes Maki with him, a woman he meets that same night by the Tama River. He introduces her to his brother as his wife.
Poetic and with dry humor
Yoshio and Maki's fake married life unfolds in the cool, remote surroundings of Hokkaido. Kamada uses the chilly landscapes of the Japanese North as a mirror for his characters' emotions. The film combines an understated style with bone-dry humor, resulting in a unique viewing experience.
Camera Japan Festival in Amsterdam
Ranshima Bound is part of the Camera Japan Festival, the largest Japanese film festival in the Benelux. Every year, the festival screens a selection of Japanese arthouse films, documentaries, and anime in Amsterdam. The screening takes place at LAB111, an unconventional cult cinema in Amsterdam.
