Annette Messager, an indispensable figure of international contemporary art, makes her first foray into the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature.
A bestiary of human passions
More than 80 works are deployed across fifteen rooms, following a thematic route (loving transports, capture and captivity, the blood of beasts, tamed savagery...) where major installations, emblematic works, and unpublished pieces dialogue with the museum's collections.
An unprecedented angle: animality as a key to reading
For the first time, Annette Messager's work is approached in the light of animality. Although the animal figure has been a constant element of her work since the 1970s, it had never been the subject of such an exploration. The animal world becomes a mirror of human passions and impulses: they resemble us, parody us, reveal us.
An international route
Laureate of the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2005 and of the Praemium Imperiale in 2016, Annette Messager has been the subject of major exhibitions in the world's leading institutions: the MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Hayward Gallery in London, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, or the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. This exhibition at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature fits into this global recognition, offering the artist one of the most singular frameworks possible.
