Free and donation-powered, the two-day festival brings underground electronic music, local artists and community-built culture to Leslie Lookout Park
PHANTOMFEST: Open Air, Toronto's free, donation-powered outdoor music and arts festival, returns to Leslie Lookout Park on August 29 and 30 with this year's theme, Phoenix Rising, bringing two days of underground electronic music, local art and community programming to Toronto's waterfront.
Women-led and built around a community-funded model, PHANTOMFEST does not charge admission. Instead, the festival relies on donations and community support to keep the experience accessible to everyone.
The festival grew from founder Christina Barron's free outdoor parties, which began in 2016. What started as an informal gathering has evolved into a women-led cultural platform, with women involved across the production of the festival, from booking and creative direction to site operations.
"I grew up on dance floors. I've seen what music, art and dancing can do for people, and I believe everyone should have access to that, without judgment or financial barriers," said Christina Barron, founder of PHANTOMFEST. "We're building the kinds of spaces we want to see more of in the world: passionate, inspired, creative and open to everyone. Keeping PHANTOMFEST free means those who can contribute help make that possible for those who can't."
"PHANTOM is an illusion. YOU make it a reality" has become the festival's guiding line, reflecting its core model: PHANTOMFEST exists because the community shows up to build it, staff it, participate in it and fund it together.
