Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker
Festive, sparkling, elegant, and bursting with energy: the music of The Nutcracker has it all. It seems as if Pyotr Tchaikovsky was made for composing this Christmas ballet. With the melodic richness, the orchestral colors, and the natural elegance of his music, Tchaikovsky set a new—and towering—standard for ballet music. Tchaikovsky's elegant agility aligns beautifully with Shostakovich's spirited Second Jazz Suite. All that agility contrasts beautifully with Arvo Pärt's introspective Vater unser and Verhelst's Monumental Etude, in which time seems to stand still for a moment. Moreover, halfway through the concert, the wind section takes you to the mysterious and compelling world of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, where lyricism and suspense converge.
