About the event

Let’s consider:

1. What is status? How is it different from wealth, power, or popularity, and can someone have one without the others? 2. Status depends on how others evaluate us rather than on anything we possess outright. What follows from the fact that our standing is, in a sense, held by other people? 3. Where do you notice status operating in everyday life: at work, among friends, online, in families? Are some settings free of it, or is it everywhere? 4. Status hierarchies can help groups cooperate by clarifying who leads, who is trusted, and whose contributions count. Do these benefits justify the inequalities they create? 5. How much of the status we assign to people reflects their actual contributions, and how much reflects assumptions attached to categories like gender, race, class, age, or accent? 6. Is the desire for status a basic human need, a cultural product, or a mix of both? Would a society that cared less about status be better, or simply different? 7. Some argue that competing for esteem drives people to excel and contribute; others argue it breeds anxiety, resentment, and conspicuous display. Which effect dominates, and does it depend on the setting? 8. Can status be distributed more equally, or does esteem lose its meaning if everyone receives it? What would a fairer status system look like?

No homework required, but if you’d like to reflect ahead of time, you can watch or listen to this podcast episode:

• Ezra Klein Show: We Build Civilizations on Status. But We Barely Understand It. • Cecilia Ridgeway, Guest-host Rogé Karma interviews Cecilia Ridgewayd, author of Status: Why Is It Everywhere? Why Does It Matter? (2019). • NYT Link: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/13/opinion/ezra-klein-podcast-cecilia-ridgeway.html • Direct available in a comment below for attendees.

Shy Philosopher Night Procedure and Code of Ethics: 1. Discussion Style We aim for a cooperative flow, like passing a ball among teammates rather than engaging in back-and-forth debates. Please share the “ball” so everyone has a voice. 2. Brief Points (2-3 Minutes) Keep points concise so we can hear a variety of perspectives. Occasional exceptions may come up naturally, but our goal is inclusivity. 3. No Crosstalk Respect the speaker’s time without interjecting or questioning mid-speech. If you’d like to add something, simply raise your hand and the facilitator will guide the flow. 4. Avoid Ad Hominem Remarks Focus critiques on ideas, actions, or beliefs—not people. For example, say “This idea could have certain impacts” rather than “You’re wrong.” This ensures a respectful environment. 5. Respectful Engagement As we are guests in someone’s home, let’s maintain a high level of respect for the space and one another. Mindfulness, patience, and courtesy are essential to making this gathering comfortable and enjoyable for all. 6. Cancellation Courtesy If your plans change and you’re unable to attend, please let us know at least a day in advance by canceling your RSVP. Since space is limited, early notice helps ensure that someone else interested can join in your place. We really appreciate your understanding and help in making this a smooth, inclusive experience for everyone.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
